Mardi Gras是美國最大的狂歡節(jié)盛會，每年四旬齋（復(fù)活節(jié)前的40天齋戒）前的第一個禮拜二都會在新奧爾良舉行，有數(shù)百萬人參加，通常從狂歡節(jié)前二個星期就開始游行娛樂活動，到Mardi Gras當(dāng)日則達(dá)到高潮。對許多美國年輕人來說，能到Mardi Gras一游就像我們中國農(nóng)村小孩子盼望過年一樣開心呢。
Mardi Gras由Mardi和Gras兩部分組成，Mardi源于古羅馬語“星期二”，因為羅馬人把星期二叫做Dies Martis，這是羅馬戰(zhàn)神Mars（火星）的日子，Mars在法語中寫作Mardi。Gras則有"盛大輝煌"之意。因此Mardi Gras就表示“盛大的星期二”了。
Mardi Gras是天主教徒在復(fù)活節(jié)（Easter）前第47天必須舉行的齋戒儀式，通常是禮拜二，源自法語Shrove Tuesday（懺悔星期二），因為第二天就是Ash Wednesday（圣灰星期三），即"四旬齋"的第一天，在這一天很多基督徒都用灰在前額畫一標(biāo)記，作為懺悔和必死的標(biāo)志，開始長達(dá)40天的齋戒（周六周日除外）。齋戒之前當(dāng)然要大吃大喝一番了，因此Mardi Gras又叫Fat Tuesday。
Mardi Gras狂歡節(jié)的氣氛勝似全球知名的的巴西嘉年華會，充斥著各式各樣的慶祝活動，比如漫天亂撒的珠鏈、錢幣和奇奇怪怪的小玩具，身穿奇裝異服的“奇人異士”，當(dāng)然還有大桶的啤酒和King Cakes（國王蛋糕）。
