Comment on "Troubled IMF needs changes" (China Daily, May 25)

The top post in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should go to someone with merit regardless of his or her nationality. Perhaps a candidate from one of the emerging countries could reflect the reality of the world economy better.

A European could retain the deputy managing-director's post, especially to look into the European Union's acute financial problems. Europe faces a serious crisis and Europeans need some strong signals to calm the market and the people. Having a European as the second most powerful person in the IMF will send a clear message that Europeans have not been left out.

If this conciliation of interests could be worked out, it would pave the way for more understanding and the shaping of international cooperation and reform instead of the attitude of confrontation and foot-dragging used by the different blocs. A reform is needed not only in IMF, but also in the World Bank.
