A total of 562.4 million yuan ($91.97 million) has been given out to poor students in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, to support their education through a project called “Sharing the Sunshine”, according to a news conference for the project on August 15.

“Share the Sunshine”, initiated by the Zhangjiagang Charity Federation and Zhangjiagang Charity Foundation, started in 2005 and has helped 23,999 students.

Since last year, students from families with yearly income two times the city-level low income standard qualify to get the subsidy. The requirement was 1.5 times in previous years. Postgraduates were also included in the project last year, meaning it covered everyone from kindergarteners to postgraduates.

In 2013, 2,435 students got subsidies from the project, said Zhu Guanjun, a staff member of the charity federation and foundation.

For those from low-income families, postgraduates will receive 8,000 yuan this year, undergraduates 5,000-6,000 yuan, high school students 3,000 yuan and kindergarteners 1,000 yuan.

For those from families with income no more than two times the city-level low income standard, postgraduates will get 4,000 yuan this year, undergraduates 2,500-3,000 yuan, high school students 1,500 yuan and kindergarteners 500 yuan.

More than 7.27 million yuan will be provided this year.
