About 90 percent of civil servants in Central China's Hubei province have been diagnosed as unhealthy, with many suffering serious medical conditions, Wuhan Evening News reported on Monday quoting a report from a local hospital.

A statistical report compiled from the results of health checkups, released by Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, shows that about 34 percent of civil servants are suffering from diseases related to the liver, topping other afflictions in terms of the incidence of disease.

Zou Shiqing, a doctor at the checkup center at Zhongnan Hospital that conducted the tests, said frequently drinking liquor is the main factor leading to liver disease.

It is commonly known in China that civil servants are required to attend a lot of banquets as part of their jobs, especially high-level officials.

Diseases relating to the kidneys and hypertension rank as the second and third most common among civil servants, at 21 percent and 20 percent respectively.
