Eight killed in highway pile-up in central China
( Xinhua )
Updated: 2010-10-16

Two more victims were found at the scene of a highway pile-up in Hubei Province Saturday, bringing the death toll to eight, traffic police said.

The accident involving more than 10 vehicles happened between 7:25 am to 7:55 am in Xiaogan City on a section of the north-south highway that links Beijing to Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macao, officers of Hubei Traffic Police said.

More than 90 police officers rushed to the site to help 30 people in the vehicles and took 23 injured to hospital.

Heavy fog was probably a factor in the accident, said a police spokesman.

Traffic began to resume at noon, but northbound vehicles must take a detour. Traffic flow to the south remained normal.

The fog also disrupted the operation of an airport in Wuhan, capital of Hubei, leaving more than 2,000 passengers stranded for almost two hours.

Visibility at Tianhe International Airport dropped to 150 meters at around 8 am, delaying 31 domestic flights.

Airport operations resumed at 9:50 am after the fog dispersed.
