Addressing people 對(duì)人的稱(chēng)呼

"I notice that in the BBC's TV drama "Sherlock", the detective and his friend address each other by their first names - Sherlock and John. But in the movie "Sherlock Holmes", with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, they address each other by their family names only - Holmes and Watson. Is it because the former is set in contemporary times while the latter in the 19th century?"

It seemed to me that a careful examination of the room and the lawn might possibly reveal some traces of this mysterious individual. You know my methods, Watson."
