一天朋友談及一則大爆“名人”家丑的八卦新聞，說那些家族中人以搬弄“skeleton in the closet”為樂事，難道這些名人家的壁櫥中真的有骷髏？
他說的“skeleton in the closet”（英國人則習慣說成skeleton in the cupboard）現(xiàn)在的意義并沒有那么可怕。不過據(jù)說當年這個習語產(chǎn)生的時候的確指那些有錢人家謀殺了一個人，把骸骨暗藏在壁櫥中，不讓外人知道， 從此 skeleton in the closet 就成了那家人的秘密，后來這個短語用來指不可或不愿外揚的家丑，簡稱作family skeleton。例如： Many old families have a number of skeletons in their closets which they are loath to discuss（許多古老的家族中有很多秘密，他們不愿談及這些話題。）
