Anita Mui, Joey Yung, Jay Chou named best-selling singers in HK

Late Chinese pop diva Anita Mui, Hong Kong's Joey Yung and Taiwan's Jay Chou were named Hong Kong's best-selling singers in 2004 at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's top sales awards ceremony on Tuesday.

Yung was the big winner of the night. She was the year's top-selling female singer overall, with three of her albums among the top 10 Cantonese releases and one on the Mandarin top 10 list, IFPI's Hong Kong group said in a statement which did not detail sales figures.

Cantonese is the Chinese dialect used in Hong Kong. Mandarin is spoken throughout the Chinese Mainland.

Alan Tam and fellow Hong Kong singer Hacken Lee clinched best-selling honors in the male category. The pop stars teamed up for a concert series which was recorded and released.

Chou's "Seven Mile Fragrance" was the No. 1 Mandarin album in Hong Kong. The best-selling Cantonese record was Mui's "Anita Classic Moment Live," a live recording of her final concert before she died of complications from cervical cancer in December 2003.

Two of Mui's albums, including "Anita Classic Moment Live," were among the top 10 Cantonese albums in 2004.
