  US urged to stop meddling in Tibet

China told the United States yesterday to stop using the Tibet issue to meddle in China's internal affairs.

"The Tibetan issue is part of China's internal affairs, and no other country has the right to interfere in the matter," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi in a routine press briefing.

He made the remark in response to a US plan to appoint a new special co-ordinator on Tibet.

Sun reiterated that Tibet is an inalienable part of China. "We demand that the US side adhere to its stand that Tibet is part of China and does not support the independence of Tibet," he said.

The Bush administration reportedly may name Undersecretary of State Paula Dobriansky as its new special coordinator for Tibet. If appointed, Dobriansky will become the highest-ranking official ever to hold the position, which was first introduced by the Clinton administration in 1997.
