Rescue continues a week after SW China mine flood

(Xinhua) Updated: 2012-09-18 20:35

GUIYANG - Rescuers are continuing to look for eight miners who went missing one week ago in a coal mine flood in southwest China's Guizhou province, rescuers said Tuesday.

More than 50,000 cubic meters of water have been drained from the Guba coal mine in the city of Fuquan, according to Yang Yong, vice mayor of Fuquan and chief commander of the local rescue headquarters.

Rescuers are working to clear mud and water from the mine in order to find the eight workers, he said.

The flood occurred on Sept 11 at 11:30 pm, when 41 miners were working underground. Thirty-three managed to escape.

The mine's managers are in police custody.

The cause of the flood is under investigation.
