30 killed, 15 missing as Typhoon hits E. China

HANGZHOU -  Typhoon Saomai, the strongest to hit the Chinese mainland in 50 years, has left at least 30 dead and 15 missing after it landed in east China's Zhejiang Province Thursday afternoon.

By the early hours of Friday, 28 people have been killed and three missing in Zhejiang, sources with the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters said early Friday morning.

Two people have died and 12 others are missing in neighboring Fujian Province, according to local sources.

Saomai landed in Cangnan County of Zhejiang at 5:25 p.m. Thursday with a wind speed of 216 km per hour, bringing torrential rains and strong winds.
