The government of south China's Guangdong Province has moved to strengthen reservoirs amid fears that heavy rains could cause flooding.

Heavy rains hit most parts of the province on Wednesday and Thursday, with rising water levels threatening the safety of some reservoirs.

Northern, central and southeastern parts of Guangdong saw daily rainfalls of 60 to 95 millimeters in places, according to the local meteorological observatory.

Forecasts show heavy rains will hit again with strong winds and possibly hail in the next two days, said the observatory.

The province has 6,732 reservoirs, with a total volume of more than 40 billion cubic meters. The rains threatened some reservoirs with safety problems, warned provincial flood prevention authorities.

The provincial government has urged local authorities to strengthen flood prevention measures and ensure the safety of reservoirs and people.
