PM Shehbaz pushes for rapid shift to digital economy

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the critical role of a digital transaction system in ensuring transparency within Pakistan’s economy.

Presiding over a weekly meeting on advancing a cashless and digital economy held in Islamabad on Thursday, the Prime Minister underscored the urgent need to streamline payment systems between citizens and businesses, and to promote public awareness regarding the benefits of digital financial platforms.

He instructed that all committees working on the transition to a cashless economy must collaborate closely with relevant stakeholders and submit practical, results-driven proposals.

During the meeting, it was revealed that the State Bank of Pakistan is developing a strategy to simplify digital payment processes, particularly to facilitate transactions for the business community.

It was also shared that a user-friendly package will be introduced to encourage small businesses to adopt digital payment solutions and be integrated into the digital economy.

The current goal is to raise the number of users making digital payments via mobile apps from 95 million to 120 million, and to increase the transaction volume from 7.5 billion rupees to 12 billion rupees.

However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed that these targets should be further increased, effectively doubled, showing his intent to accelerate the country’s digital financial growth.

The meeting also highlighted ongoing efforts to expand public internet access in Islamabad, particularly in key areas such as hospitals, schools, government buildings, parks, and metro stations.
