The upcoming Beijing meeting between China, Russia and Iran on the Iranian nuclear issue is the latest efforts China has made to strengthen communication and restore negotiations over the issue, China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.

As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and a party to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, China always believes that the Iranian nuclear issue should be properly solved through political and diplomatic means, Mao said on Thursday, one day before the meeting.

China also stands for maintaining the international nonproliferation regime to promote peace and stability in the Middle East, Mao said.

The spokeswoman urged all parties involved to stay calm and practice restraint to avoid escalation of the issue and even confrontation and conflict.

"China sincerely hopes that all parties will work in the same direction, keep enhancing trust and reducing doubts, and realize restoration of talks and negotiations as soon as possible," she said.
