A spokeswoman from the Chinese mainland said on Friday that the Democratic Progressive Party authorities persistently adhere to a "Taiwan independence" separatist stance which poses the greatest threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks after Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te exaggerated the "China threat" and the island's "resolve for self defense" during a speech in Jinmen on Friday.

Zhu said that "Taiwan independence" and peace in the Taiwan Strait are incompatible, and Lai's separatist stance leads to the dangers of conflict in the Taiwan Strait, internal societal division and confrontation, and harm to the interests of the people.

Zhu said that the Lai administration recklessly squanders the hard-earned money of the Taiwan people to purchase weapons, gradually hitching Taiwan to the bandwagon, while hypocritically claiming to hope for peaceful development across the Strait.

This once again exposes the hypocritical and sinister nature of the Lai administration, she said.

Both sides of the Strait should unite and take action to firmly oppose the provocations and reckless actions of the Lai administration for "Taiwan independence", ensuring peace in the Taiwan Strait and security for the people.
