Doctor turns frontline struggle into policy proposals

As head of the respiratory and intensive care unit at Peking University First Hospital, Wang Guangfa took part in the mission to investigate the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, Hubei province. He also fought multiple local outbreaks on the frontlines and led his team at the hospital to weather the most recent epidemic wave.
He said quick expansion of intensive care units and implementation of triaged systems played an important role in battling the disease and saving lives of seriously ill patients.
However, the epidemic also exposed problems, such as a lack of maintenance at infectious disease hospitals and insufficient capacity in respiratory and intensive care departments.
As a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a member of China Association for Promoting Democracy, he plans to submit proposals based on his firsthand experience in these areas.
