A mainland spokesman on Friday called on people from the business circle of Taiwan to realize that "Taiwan independence" will only bring disaster to the island, after Tsao Hsing-Cheng, founder of the world's second-largest contract microchip maker, defamed the mainland and the island's pro-unification faction.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said it's believed that the majority from the island's business circle can see clear the evil intention of the United States to use Taiwan to contain the mainland, and wish to take concrete actions to maintain and promote the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations.

The remarks came after Tsao, former chairman of United Microelectronics Corp based in Hsinchu of Taiwan, announced on Friday a plan to donate US$100 million (NT$3 billion) to support the island's "defense" capabilities amid ongoing live-fire drills near the island by the People's Liberation Army after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan.

Pelosi's visit to Taiwan severely undermined China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and the interests of compatriots on both sides of the Straits. Ma said, "It is a just and righteous move for the mainland to take necessary countermeasures."

The actions target the secessionist activities and the interference of foreign forces, instead of compatriots in Taiwan, and they are aimed at fundamentally safeguarding the vital interests of compatriots on both sides and the overall interests of the Chinese nation, he said.

What Tsao did to attack the mainland distorted facts and aimed to support the "Taiwan independence" forces and foreign forces, Ma said, adding that he didn't represent the Taiwan business circle and the Taiwan people, and his efforts will be in vain.
