Plastic waste recycled into portable speakers

A Brighton-based startup is using plastic waste deemed non-recyclable by local UK councils to make its new portable Bluetooth speaker.

Created by design studio Gomi, each speaker features a rectangular body formed from colorful marble-effect plastic – and each speaker uses the same amount of the material as 100 plastic bags.

Gomi takes flexible plastic (LDPE) such as bubble wrap, plastic bags and pallet wrapping, then melts and compresses it to create a sturdy eco-friendly material.

"We were inspired by the cradle-to-cradle design process, thinking about our products full-lifecycle right from the beginning of our design process," said Gomi cofounder Tom Meades.
