Born in Xi'an, Zhang inherited both his kite-making skills and flair for design from his father, who also excels at the craft. Zhang won a number of competitions with his special dynamic kites, which have created a stir among the public.
As an inheritor of the intangible culture heritage in Shaanxi province, Zhang Tianwei devotes himself to passing on the skills and art of dynamic kites to his only apprentice, Li Tao. "I will be proud of Li Tao if he surpasses me someday." Zhang said.
